This is a preface-book. A preface made up of other prefaces. The ones published in the various editions of the catalogue of the Damascus National Museum, from 1919 to the end of the last century – prefaces which can be found here, not only annotated, but also accompanied by rare archival material and historical chronicles. It is therefore a republishing project, in the form of a palimpsest, or an untimely guide through the lives of the Museum and its catalogue. As if to observe, alike a structuralist analysis, “the variations of the myth” or the multiple body. The Damascus National Museum is approached by a constellation of historical dates but also of micro-histories and iconographic survivals. Or how history, in the broader sense and including in the tragic sense, shines through the walls of the museum, its collections, its storage; its national and intimate representations, its real perimeter as well as its nomadic tendency.

Ceci est un livre-préface. Une préface composée d'autres préfaces. En l'occurrence celles publiées dans les différentes éditions du catalogue du musée national de Damas, de 1919 à la fin du siècle dernier – préfaces qui se retrouvent ici, non seulement annotées, mais aussi accompagnées de documents d'archives et de chroniques historiques. Il s'agit donc d'une réédition-palimpseste ou d'un guide intempestif à travers les vies du musée et de son catalogue. Comme pour en observer, à la manière d'une analyse structuraliste, les «variations du mythe » ou le corps multiple. On y appréhende le musée national de Damas par une constellation de dates historiques, mais aussi de microhistoires et de survivances iconographiques. Ou comment l'histoire, au sens plus large et y compris au sens tragique, transparaît à travers les murs du musée, ses collections, ses réserves, ses représentations nationales et intimes, son périmètre réel comme sa tendance nomade.
